Now, let’s talk about the main issue of this article i.e. how to create goals in the most practical and strategic manner. The goal, i.e. blueprint, needs to be as detailed as possible and flexible to some degree, so be specific but not too rigid on the details. You will have to understand the following fields and why they are important and how to use them correctly. Let’s understand this using a fairly difficult goal example “Get a job” that puts all of the above instructions together:
- Goal Title (Required)
Be specific. In this case, “Get a Job in 6 months” or “Get a Paid Internship in 3 months” or “Get a Job as a Chief”. A title that will make you instantly aware of what you are working towards. Basically, it is the outcome you desire.
- Goal Description (Optional)
Description is not always needed. But it does help to add some extra details just for clarity. In our case, it could be “Find a job close to my house and is compatible with my university class schedule” or “Avoid applying in these companies or locations and prioritize corporate companies over startups”. Anything that further provides clarity and direction.
- Goal Deadline (Required)
The deadline is crucial. However, it is important to be realistic. A deadline of 1 month is impossible, 3 months is tight and likely impractical but 6 or 9 months gives plenty of room to work and deal with unexpected challenges or change of plans. It is important to set some room to breathe which helps you be more flexible.
- Goal Priority (Required)
Priority depends on your current situation or desire. If you are looking for part time or as a hobby, priority can be Optional or Low. If you are in the last year of university or a fresh graduate, priority can be Medium or High. If you are in serious financial trouble, priority must be Critical.
- Goal Category (Required)
This is simple and straightforward. Category, in this case, would be “Career” or “Income”. If your goals do not fall under any of the default lists, just use “Others” as the Goal Category.
- Goal Strategy / Action Plan (At least one task needed)
This is the most important bit. Your guide/roadmap to success. The “How To” of “Get a Job”. The most practical and efficient strategy would be the following:
1. Create/Update CV
2. Create a template/standard Cover Letter
3. Create a LinkedIn profile (Optional)
4. Make a list of companies to apply
5. Make a list of positions to apply
6. Track alerts for vacancy notices (Either via LinkedIn, Social Media or Company Website)
7. Create a template/standard ‘job application’ email
8. Apply to at least 6 vacancies in 6 month
While framing your goal strategy or milestones, you do need to keep note of some key advice. First of all, you always include actions not desires. See how there is nothing about Interviews or Follow-Ups in our Goal Strategy. The actions/tasks you can do no matter what, but, whether you will secure interviews is a different matter. Secondly, be specific about the action, do not be vague. Instead of “Apply to vacancies”, it needs to be “Apply to 3 vacancies” so that you know your task requirement. And finally, be flexible. Notice how you can do any of the steps in any order and even skip one or two, expect the last one.
That is all you need to know to get started with blueprint i.e. THE Goal Setting App. If you take these things to mind, you will surely optimize your goal setting approach and increase your overall success in all of your life’s pursuits.
